Science
Intent
At Hampton Junior School we aim to inspire a lifelong curiosity and passion for science. Our enquiry-based curriculum is designed to provide all children with a solid understanding of the world around them. We focus on encouraging students to ask questions, explore through hands-on activities, and engage in scientific thinking and problem-solving.
Through a progressive and engaging approach, we strive to equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to think critically, investigate ideas, and make informed decisions. Our goal is to foster a love of learning and exploration, empowering children to become confident and capable scientists, both in the classroom and beyond.
History
Intent
History, at Hampton Junior School, fires children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Children consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like, how these societies organised themselves and what beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions. As they do this, children develop a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people.
Furthermore, children will develop skills through researching, examining sources and artefacts, sifting through evidence and debating their point of view – skills that will prepare them for adult life.
Geography
Intent
At Hampton Junior School, we believe that geography is a wonderful way to spark children’s curiosity and fascination about the world they live in. Through our geography curriculum, we develop their knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps, and a range of problem-solving and investigative skills both inside and outside the classroom.
Exploring the link between the physical and human world encourages our children to understand how we are connected to a global community. Through stimulating discussions, our children are able to evaluate and reflect on the way we interact with the world and most crucially, what we can do to sustain the environment around us.
Art and Design
Intent
The high-quality art and design education at Hampton Junior School engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress through the school, they are encouraged to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design communicating what they see, think and feel through the use of texture, form and pattern. They are shown how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to different times and cultures. Children are given the opportunity to study the work of great artists, architects and designers, allowing them to develop skills and techniques to suit and apply to their own art work.
Computing
Intent
In a world where computing takes a pivotal role in our students’ lives, at Hampton Junior School we aim to educate on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely. We want our pupils to be creators not consumers of technology and our broad, spiral curriculum encompasses computer science, information technology and digital literacy. We recognise that technology can allow pupils to share their learning in creative ways.
Music
Intent
We provide a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum and ensuring the progressive development of musical concepts, knowledge and skills across each year group, as well as wider life skills such as co-operation, discussion, self-confidence & reflection. Our music lessons are designed to fit into the topic based learning of the school and include many cross curricular links. Children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.
We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and including music created and performed by people of different cultures, races and backgrounds. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.
Religious Education
Intent
Religious Education has a vital role to play in promoting respect for, and understanding of, the different religions and belief systems which are represented not only in our school community, but also the wider world. At the heart of our curriculum, is a firm commitment to helping all children to recognise that they live in a diverse and varied society encompassing many different cultures, faiths and world views and to foster mutual respect and understanding.
French
Intent
At Hampton Junior School, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages. We aim to introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French, confidence to speak in French with others and know how important other languages can be in their future.
Personal Social and Health Education
Intent
Our intention is that when children leave HJS, they will do so with the knowledge, skills and attributes to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and resilience to overcome challenges and know that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.
Through PSHE lessons, children will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become
active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them.
Design Technology
Intent
At Hampton Junior School, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. Children also evaluate past and present design and technology to enable them to become informed consumers as well as potential innovators. Through the study of both design and food technology, pupils learn how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising, healthy and capable citizens with the confidence to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
Physical Education
Intent
At Hampton Junior School, it is our belief that our varied and challenging curriculum offers opportunity to children to thrive and aid their physical and psychological development. Exposing children to a broader range of sports enables healthy progression in skill, competence and coordination. By doing so, children begin to become more confident in their ability and start to participate in ambitious competitions. Physical education has the power to promote a healthy lifestyle and positive mental health, which is at the forefront of all children’s well-being.
