  • Battle of the Books

    Written by Aurora 4S

In Year 4 myself and 7 other pupils took part in the amazing competition called Battle of the Books. The participants were myself, Ella (4M), Viana (4M), Leo (4H), Charlie (4H), Zak A (4S), Lucas (4K) and Emma (4K). We studied 7 books: Wild Journey, Boy, The Arrival, Cloud Tea Monkeys, Cosmic and The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. From February we met every Monday lunch time with Mrs Simms and discussed the books and answered questions on them. We really enjoyed delving into the books in detail and every week we completed homework on the books; thinking of our own comprehension questions that we could ask each other in the next session. Mrs Simms always gave us a biscuit at the end of the session which we loved. Then the big day arrived; 25th June - we went to St James' School and competed against 12 other schools in a competition of who knew the books the best. I personally think we did amazing! The question rounds were nerve wrecking but once we got going we did really well. There were 30 random comprehension questions about the 7 books. We came 3rd in the question round which was an incredible achievement, we were very pleased and Mrs Simms was so proud of us. We really enjoyed our day. It was fun meeting the pupils from the other schools, everyone was really respectful and supported each other. To top the day off we met Gareth P. Jones, who is a children's author and he told us all about how he thinks up stories and the process of writing them. We had a brilliant day and we really enjoyed the whole experience of Battle of the Books.
