The Arts and PE

The Arts

The Art curriculum at Hampton Junior School has been designed with the ultimate goal to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We provide the pupils with opportunities to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They are also taught how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Over the course of their time at HJS, the pupils enjoy a variety of topics, focusing on developing their skills and knowledge in:

  • sketching and painting
  • printing
  • textiles
  • sculpture
  • collage
  • digital media

 Pupils are taught:

  • to utilise their sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  • to improve their mastery of art and design techniques with a range of materials
  • about great artists, architects and designers in history

Children’s art work is celebrated in the volume of displays throughout the school and also during our annual exhibition of the pieces created during Creative Arts Week. We have an Art Studio where the children can become fully engaged in a variety of media, using a range of resources.

Links to the local and wider community help develop pupils’ enthusiasm and appreciation of art. Visits are planned to art galleries and interesting locations where pupils can gather ideas and inspiration.

Physical Education

At Hampton Junior School, we provide a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to participate and engage in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. This supports our whole school vision: 'Be the best you can be.' The objective of our PE curriculum is to provide opportunities for all pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Furthermore, children are encouraged to take part in competitive sport through inter-house competitions as well as external fixtures. We believe that opportunities to compete regularly in sport facilitates character building and reflects upon our school values such as resilience and respect.

Our KS2 curriculum covers:

  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Invasion Games
  • Striking and Fielding
  • Net and Wall/ Divided Court
  • Athletics
  • Swimming
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

PE and Games lessons are provided by class teachers on a twice weekly basis throughout the school, with one indoor and one outdoor lesson. Please see each year group’s curriculum map to see when each aspect of the curriculum is covered. Our facilities for the teaching of PE at Hampton Junior School range from our newly-built Rose Hall to our Oldfield Road playing fields. Such facilities enable us to host sponsored walks, sporting fixtures, sports days and Borough inclusive competitions.

At Hampton Junior School, we have worked hard and are extremely proud to have been awarded the Gold standard school games mark for the past 3 years. A reflection of our commitment to providing high-quality physical education.

Each term, we run an extensive range of clubs that cater for all interests and abilities. We work closely with a range of outdoor providers to ensure we are delivering high quality extra-curricular activities to support our children’s learning. We are proud of our many highly successful teams, such as our football teams, that represent our school at a range of matches and tournaments.
